Reminiscing The Moon is nothing less than unique. it is not like your conventional show that has a starting and an ending. instead it shows a total of 14 segments to depict the different ideas of reminiscing the moon. didn't i tell you Sakti is a genius. he's choreography that fuses both traditional and contemporary dance is something that you don't always get to see. and here's another thing that you don't normally see either: Chinese and Angmohs doing traditional indonesian dance. but of course it wasn't exactly traditional. if not i would have fallen asleep.
it was quite difficult trying to understand the concept of the dance. that was until i translated the title in malay. Reminiscing The Moon is Mengenangkan Bulan. they both mean the same thing, to reminisce the moon. but Bulan however means 2 things: moon, and month. and month gives the idea of pregnant women and women having their period. that explains scenes of women throwing their hair about in agony and the oval shaped thing that looks like an egg. so the dance didn't only take the title literally, with the moon appearing at the back every now and then throughout the dance, but it shows more deeply the story of womanhood. and i think the dance also tried to show the strength women possess as there were scenes where women would go against the men like one where they fought over a seat. ahh but there are some parts of the dance that i don't get at all. like the roses, the white figure (which i hate because whenever he comes in the dance turns dark and evil!), the woman in traditional outfit, the moon in the water, the chicken (!!!!) etc.
by the way this is just my take on the dance. i didn't really read the proper definition provided in the booklet. well just like poetry, different people see it differently. but to criticize a dance performance is definitely much easier than to criticize a poem.
it was such a wonderful night. good show, good company, good clothes heh and good food... the high life...
